Choking Candle

Experiment 4 - Choking Candle

Today we set out to solve the problem of how long will it take a candle to burn out when covered with a jar; 3 jars where used of varying size.

Hypothesis:
The different size jars will have an impact on the length of time it takes for each of the candles to blow out.

Materials

Procedure
  • at 3 separate intervals (times) we will cover the lit candles with the jars.
  • We will record the time it takes for the candle to burn out in each test

  1. The choking candle

Today, our class did an experiment about three candles in different sized jars, there was a large jar, a medium jar and a small jar. First we lit the candle and put it under the small jar. this candle went out the quicest because in order for the fire to stay burning it needs oxygen. This caused the fire in the small jar to go out quickest because with the jar so small, there was only a limited amount of oxygen, therefore the candle in the large jar burned the longest because there was the most oxygen

  2. Choking Candle Experiment

In this experiment, we used three jars, one small, one medium, and one large, and we also used three candles, a stopwatch, and a lighter. First we lit the first candle, and put the small jar on it. Then we timed how long it took to go out. It was very fast, because fire needs oxygen to keep burning, and there was little oxygen inside the jar. Next we lit the second candle, and put the medium jar on it. Then we timed it. It lasted a bit longer than the first candle, but it still went out. Again, there was limited oxygen, therefor it would eventually burn out. And lastly, we lit the third candle, and put the large jar on it, then timed it. It took the longest to go out, because there was the most oxygen in it.

  3. Choking Candles

For this experiment, we used 3 jar, 3 candles, a lighter and a stop watch. The only difference was, is that we used 3 different sizes of jars. One was small, one was medium and one was large. This experiment began when Mr. Lakusta lit the first candle and placed the small jar over top. The candle went out in about 5 seconds. Next was the medium jar. The candle lasted about 20 seconds. The last jar the largest. The candle lasted about 30 seconds. The candle with the largest jar lasted the longest because, there is more oxygen in the jar. The medium jar went out second because it hold more oxygen then the small jar, but less oxygen the large jar, so it went out second. And the smallest jar went out last because it holds less oxygen in the jar. Fire needs oxygen to live, if it doesn't have any oxygen, it will burn out.

  4. Choking Candles

In this experiment we used three 3 jars (each different sizes) three candles, a lighter, and a stopwatch. First we lit the first candle and put the small jar over it the candle burned for about 5 seconds then it stopped. Next we lit another candle and put the medium jar over it this lasted for about 25 seconds then the candle burned out. the final candle we lit and put the large candle over it this lasted for 30 seconds. The candles lasted more inside the large and medium jars because there was more oxygen in them and fire needs oxygen to keep on burning therefore if the jars don't have very much oxygen in them the candles will burn out quicker.

    1. What is the length of the candle in cm on 5 sec. 25 sec. 30 sec.

  5. In this experiment we used jars and 3 candles. We lit the candles and covered them with each jar. When we covered a candle with the small jar the candle went out faster because no air is in there so the candle will go out. In the medium jar the candle stayed a little longer because there was more air. In the large jar the candle stayed longer because there was more air in the jar and fire needs air to burn.

  6. choke candle
we put candles in different sized jars.then we lit the candles and saw how fast the candle goes out!The small jar worked the best since there is the least air in it!Air needs fire but it also burns it once it's done with it!no air can get in and out of the jar so when the fire burns up the air the fire goes out!

  7. Choking Candles
For this experiment we used 3 different sized jars and 3 candles. After lighting the candles we covered them with the jars. The smallest one went out first. The medium sized one went out next and the biggest one went out last. This happened because fire needs oxygen to survive and the biggest jar had the most oxygen.

  8. Choking Candles

To do this experiment you need 3 different sized jars, 3 candles, a lighter, and a stopwatch. To start we light the candles. Then we put a small jar over one of the candles. The candle stayed lit for 5 seconds. Then we put a medium jar over one of the candles. The candle stayed lit for 20 seconds. Then we put the biggest jar over the last candle. The candle stayed lit for 35 seconds. This happens because fire needs oxygen just like us. So the smaller the jar the less oxygen there is, so that means the fire lasts shorter.

In the small jar there is less oxygen (air) meaning that the fire will get sucked up fast and burn out. However when the jar gets bigger there is more oxygen for the fire to suck up, allowing it to burn longer. In all we learned that the more oxygen there is in the jar the longer a candle can stay lit.

  10. The Choking Candle

The fire in the first jar went out the fastest because the 1st jar was the smallest which meant it had the least amount of air so the fire would run out of fuel the fastest. The larger the jar the more air or fuel which means the longer the candle burns

  11. Inside each jar is a certain amount of oxygen. The larger jars hold more oxygen. Since fire uses oxygen, it goes out sooner in the smaller jars.

  12. The larger the measuring cylinder, the longer the time it takes for the flame to extinguish as there is more oxygen to circulate and keep the flame alive
